X&y Shiraz 2008

X&y Shiraz 2008

Tasting notes

  • Vineyard Region Margaret River, WA
  • Vintage Conditions The growing season in Margaret River for the 2008 vintage was ideal for Shiraz. Warm, bright sunny days and cool, fresh nights provided perfect ripening conditions, allowing full flavour ripeness to be achieved with fantastic colour intensity, tannin ripeness and varietal definition.
  • Grape Varietal Shiraz
  • Vinification and Maturation The vineyard blocks selected for our X&Y Shiraz are located on the warmer sites in the northern part of Margaret River. These sites consistently grow rich, ripe, fruit-driven Shiraz wines. When the decision is made to pick, the fruit is harvested at night so the fruit reaches the winery as cool as possible for a period of pre-fermentation maceration. This helps to produce lifted, floral aromatics in the end wine and ensures it has a soft, fleshy texture critical to the style. A cool ferment is then carried out on skins before pressing and racking to American oak barrels (20 per cent new) for only a short period to ensure fruit expression remains at the forefront of the wine. Meticulous blending trials involving parcels from different bocks and barrel types follows to decide the final blend for the wine.
  • Winemaker Matthew Byrne's Notes
  • Colour Deep and vibrant ruby red.
  • Aroma Rich, ripe fruits of cherry, mulberry and plum with a lovely floral lift.
  • Palate Succulent, mouth-filling Shiraz flavours of blood plums and dark cherries show on the palate while the fine, ripe tannins produce a delicate, fleshy finish.
